CULTURAL COMPETENCIES:
debunking autism myths:

This sample work showcases a learning opportunity designed for parents of children who have been diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum. The learning opportunity focuses on debunking various myths surrounding autism and teaching parents to be sensitive and open to using fact-based, reliable evidence in order to disprove an autism myth.

My own cultural competency is prevalent in this project because many steps were taken to ensure that those who are part of the autism community are represented in a respectful light while keeping the lesson professional.
exploring anorexia nervosa:

This sample of work is a research paper on the mental conditions that lead up to the physical manifestation of anorexia nervosa and what can be done by health educators to improve upon the help and education that is given to the community about this disease.

While working on this assignment, I had to make sure that the language that I used in this work was respectful, fact-based, and acknowledged the struggles of people who suffer from eating disorders. Language is especially important because there is a culture of body shaming and a cultural hyperfixation on being conventionally beautiful. In order to be culturally competent, I had to approach the topic with an open mind and carefully analyze the testimonials and sources from where I cited my data.
tb treatment for immigrants:

This project is an example of a research paper that I created that pertains to improving Tuberculosis treatment in immigrants that are coming into the United States from South-East Asian countries that are the most likely to have the latent version of the TB virus.

As this subject broaches on topics such as infectious disease and immigration, it was important to be culturally competent and use the right language to portray the situation of what I was writing about. Topics such as the cultural mindset surrounding why or why not S-E Asian immigrants go to an American doctor are covered as well as taking measures to better TB screening and treatment.
